TURKINGTON TOP OF THE PILE
STUNNING VICTORY SEES TURKINGTON TAKE BTCC CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
- Reigning BTCC champion Colin Turkington claimed his 52nd BTCC career win yesterday at Donington Park.
- Adding to his dominant performance on Saturday, Turkington recorded three top ten finishes on race day securing 46 points throughout the weekend.
- Along with setting a new qualifying lap record, his impressive results have put him top of the BTCC Championship standings at this stage.
- Praising the dedication and preparation of Team BMW, Turkington has also emphasised the need to keep the pressure on.
HOW DID THE FIRST WEEKEND BACK FEEL?
It’s so good to be back doing what we love, under pressure and driving the car to the limit. Team BMW is a great bunch of passionate and driven individuals, we enjoy being back together and working as a team.
NEW LAP RECORD HOLDER AND TOP POINTS SCORER, AN IDEAL START TO THE SEASON FOR YOU?
Yes indeed, overall that was a super weekends work, 46 points is a good day at the office! The car rolled out on Saturday in great shape and we basically just dialed it into the optimum window of performance throughout practice. I took pole here last year so to improve on that time shows we have taken a step forward.
YOU TOOK YOUR 52ND CAREER WIN IN DOMINANT FASHION, EVEN WITH 54 KGS OF BALLAST. TALK US THROUGH THAT ONE.
The win was mega and a huge clap on the back to the whole team. The car carried the weight really well and I could manage the race exactly as I wanted. I knew I had to nail the start and then the safety car restart, but the car was sweet! You can’t beat that winning feeling, especially in a competition as fierce as the BTCC. It was more difficult in race 3 though in the middle of the pack, so I keen to minimise risk and bring the BMW home in one piece.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE LEVEL OF COMPETITION THIS SEASON?
We have work to do, and that work has already begun. There are some rapid cars and drivers out there and everyone is as hungry as ever. The qualifying times show just how close the grid is and I expect that will only get tighter as the season goes on. We need to turn up at every event pushing to improve and to beat our competitors. It’s not going to be easy, but we’re fired up for the fight.
