THRUXTON QUALIFYING REPORT
SUPERB SECOND ROW START FOR TURKINGTON
Team BMW’s Colin Turkington will start on the second row of the grid for race 1 tomorrow after a superb showing in qualifying today. Clocking a time only 0.143s off pole secured P4 and puts Turkington in a great place for race day alongside BMW team mate Andrew Jordan.
Free practice one was dominated by a greasy track with very little productive running, but it was clear from FP2 that the new patches of tarmac were causing head scratching up and down the paddock. Team BMW used the session well and were able to improve the car throughout the session and find speed for qualifying.
PUTTING IN THE LAP
Track limits were a hot topic in qualifying with many times being disallowed; including an early lap for Turkington; but the Team BMW driver went on to deliver a stunning 1m15:564s, initially putting him top of the pile. Ultimately it wasn’t enough for pole, but ensured a second row start in P4. Delighted with the result, Turkington praised his team for getting the car in a great place to qualify but that attention must now shift to making it competitive for the races tomorrow.
“It’s been a really good day on the whole and we are in an ideal position for tomorrow. It’s been a difficult day for everybody managing the grip levels with the new patches of tarmac, but we improved the car during the day and found speed.
These new patches are so tricky from an engineering point of view but I’m enjoying the chase.
We now need to think about how to make the car fast at race distance. That’s 16 or 17 laps compared to only one or two today, because the hard tyre drop off here is quite severe.
It’s all about race distance now, I can’t stress that enough.
You tend to forget we are still at the beginning of this project because we are all striving for perfection but we have done a fantastic job to have a good base to work from.
Thruxton is always an engineering challenge for the car and team but today we got the most out of the 3 Series. We wrung the neck off it and got the lap. The team are in great shape for tomorrow.
