WELCOME BACK, BTCC FANS!

TURKINGTON EAGER TO START AFRESH AS SPECTATORS MAKE A RETURN TO THE RACE TRACK

  • Colin Turkington and Team BMW return to racing this weekend 12th & 13th June, following a 5 week break since the BTCC 2021 season opener.
  • It was a tricky start to the season for Turkington suffering with an unexpected back injury last time out, but the 4 x Champ is fully recovered and eager to start afresh.
  • Another good news story is the return of spectators, as UK race circuits welcome back a limited number of fans through the gates.
  • Snetterton will be the first BTCC event with fans trackside since 2019.  It was also the scene of a sensational triple podium in 2020 for Turkington, a circuit that has seen strong BMW performances in the past.
  • The qualifying format will also see a change this weekend with a special Top 10 Shootout on the cards.
  • Another returning feature is the Goodyear option tyre.  Back in play for 2021, the option tyre must be used for one of Sunday’s three races.
  • An exclusive competition for Colin Turkington fans offers you the chance to win a BMW M Performance Hoodie!

Q&A WITH COLIN

GREAT NEWS THAT YOUR BACK IS FULLY RECOVERED, WILL THAT HELP THIS WEEKEND?

Absolutely!  There’s no denying that Thuxton was one of the most difficult for me in recent times.  Having to manage that sort of pain whilst trying to perform is a big distraction.  The prospect of a race weekend without that gets me fired up and I’m excited to start the season afresh from here onwards.

DO YOU EXPECT IT TO FEEL DIFFERENT WITH GUESTS AND SPECTATORS ALLOWED BACK THROUGH THE GATES?

This is another great thing that will make Snetterton feel fresh and new.  The atmosphere of guests and spectators has been really missed by everyone in the paddock.  People come to enjoy the sport and get involved in the excitement of race day.  Without a doubt, this generates an energy and creates a sense of occasion.  It will be fantastic to see fans trackside and I’m delighted to read so many messages on social media already about how lots of people plan to be there.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST THIS WEEKEND?

The five week break has been a lifeline for me to get my back fixed but it has also felt like a very long break from racing.  I’m itching now to get back to competition and attack the season like I had planned to at Thruxton.

It looks like the weather will be nice and hot which I like, and our fitness will come into play with that too.

Snetterton is the longest lap of the season, so you get less attempts in qualifying to nail it.  I like this pressure.  The top 10 shootout will make it interesting as well and I’m looking forward to those moments where I have to make it count.

WHAT MAKES SENTTERTON DIFFERENT FROM THRUXTON FOR A DRIVER?

I would say Snetterton is a lot more technical.  It’s a classic British motor racing circuit with a great mix of high and slow speed corners.

When everything is hooked up at Snet, it’s one of the best feelings!

The high speed stuff is always my favourite, so braking through the Esses at the end of the back straight, and being right on the limit through Coram are my favourite sections.

LETS TALK TYRES

Snetterton sees the return of the OPTION tyres, a feature that has been on hold since 2019.  Drivers will have two new sets of the Goodyear Medium compound and one set of Softs at Snetterton.  Teams and drivers do not need to officially nominate the tyre choices in advance of the race.  Their choice will be confirmed on departure to the grid before each race.

TOP 10 SHOOTOUT

Making a return for 2021 at Snetterton will be the top 10 Shootout qualifying feature.  Replacing the usual 30 minute qualifying session will be a 25 minute Q1.  The top 10 drivers from this session will go on to compete in a TOP 10 SHOOTOUT for 10 minutes.  The results from this shootout will determine the top 10 grid positions for race 1 on Sunday.  The previous session will determine the grid positions for P11 – P29.
