COLIN LOOKS AHEAD TO THE THIRD EVENT OF THE 2020 BTCC SEASON
- BTCC is back on your screens this Sunday as the UK series heads to Cheshire for the 7th, 8th and 9th rounds of the 2020 season.
- This event will be the first of two back-to-back race weekends.
- Usually a fan favourite for family camping weekends, the picturesque scene will be behind closed doors, but sure to provide another fantastic instalment of TV action.
- Turkington appears attentive, insisting he and the team must continue to keep on pushing.
Q AND A WITH COLIN
YOUR POLE LAP LAST YEAR WAS SOMETHING SPECIAL, AS WAS YOUR OVERALL WEEKEND’S PERFORMANCE. WHAT HAS CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR PREVIOUS STRING OF RESULTS AT OULTON PARK?
For sure Oulton is always close to the top of the list when I’m asked about my favourite circuit. It has some of the fastest and most challenging corners in the UK like Cascades and Druids where you really need to be brave. That said, it’s also very technical, so you need to be very precise and not over-drive the car.
It’s been favourable for the rear wheel drive BMW in the past; the slow speed technical sections really suit our car. Last year it all came together like a perfect storm really. Conditions were great, I was driving well and we were in a sweet spot with the car. Strangely enough though, I had a really bad nights sleep on Saturday evening, but it seemed to make me super focused on the Sunday.
THE TEMPERATURES AND SUBSEQUENT TYRE WEAR AT BRANDS HATCH PLAYED A CRITICAL ROLE. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE KEY FACTOR THIS WEEKEND?
Again, it could be the weather and maybe changing conditions. At the moment it’s looking unsettled with sunshine and showers so you could find yourself doing practice in the sunshine but qualifying in the rain. A mixed bag of conditions always throws up a mixed bag of results so we’ll be keeping a close eye on that. I’ve been preparing myself for all scenarios, so that’s something else you must think about and be ready for.
OULTON PARK IS FAMOUS FOR ITS FAMILY FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE, BUT NO FANS THIS TIME.
On our Friday night track walks the vibe from the campsite is always amazing. The BBQ’s and tunes do create that festival atmosphere giving a real sense of event, which will be missed, but I think by now we’ve learnt to just get our heads down and concentrate on the job at hand. ITV are providing superb coverage so it’s important for fans to just continue to stay safe, follow advice, and make the most of what you can do. I think it’s a good thing to have something to look forward to.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RACE OF THE SEASON SO FAR?
Race 2 at Brands Hatch was one of my best. The car was absolutely perfect and was responding exactly as I wanted. Give me that car and I can drive like that all day long! We had to maximise the opportunities that appeared on all fronts at Brands and we did just that. The whole team emerged from lockdown engaged and hungry to improve, but we won’t stay ahead of our opponents if we don’t keep building on this momentum. I want us to enjoy more races like that one at Brands Hatch, so it’s important we keep on pushing.
