TURKINGTON TOPS TEST #1
COLIN TURKINGTON HITS THE GROUND RUNNING AT FIRST OFFICIAL BTCC TEST
- Colin Turkington completed his first BTCC test of 2022 yesterday at Donington Park.
- Behind the wheel of his WSR run Team BMW 33e M Sport, Turkington topped the time sheets ahead of the other 22 cars taking part.
- This was the debut test session for the new Cosworth developed Hybrid energy system in the Team BMW cars, ahead of it’s highly anticipated race debut on 24th April.
- Despite a misty and damp start that delayed proceedings, the test went ahead in dry but cold conditions.
Team BMW have worked extremely hard to make sure we can hit the ground running. Reliability is always going to be a factor and my car ran faultlessly. I’ve been incredibly impressed with the passion and efforts that have went into this package over the winter.
This allowed us to get through the test programme, so yeah, I’m enjoying being back in the car, although we still have lots to learn – we are all still a bit green on the hybrid side. There is a lot of experimenting and with it being a test day we tried a lot of solutions, so it was very productive.
The first experience of hybrid, which we were all highly anticipating, you definitely feel a lift in terms of power and performance. When you deploy the energy, you feel it increase the acceleration. You know when you pick up a mushroom in Mario Karts? A bit like that!
For sure, we are going to go faster this year which is a good thing, but still, we have to focus on the handling and the chassis, because that’s number one. We want to make the car quicker mechanically and with the hybrid on top of that I think we are going to have a fast package.
