TURKINGTON TAKES CONTROL WITH DOMINANT DISPLAY AT SNETTERTON

  • Colin Turkington claimed his 55th and 56th BTCC career victories yesterday with a dominant performance at Snetterton.
  • His third place finish in race 3 topped off an almost perfect weekend for the defending champion, as he collected extra points for leading laps, pole position and two fastest laps.
  • His points tally of 60 was one of the greatest weekend scores of his career.
  • Colin’s results have launched him to the top of the championship standings.
  • Just one race weekend remains in the 2020 BTCC season.

DEBRIEF Q&A WITH COLIN

THAT IS HOW YOU BOUNCE BACK! SUCH A STUNNING PERFORMANCE COLIN, A TYPICAL TURKINGTON MASTERCLASS. WHEN DOES A WEEKEND LIKE THAT SINK IN?

When you lift your mobile phone at the end of the day and it’s going berserk with messages and notifications you know it’s been a good day. It gives me a lot of satisfaction knowing I’ve done a good job and delivered my maximum, but that’s it over. I don’t bask in the glory for long because the next race comes quickly.

I never get tired of standing on the podium and hearing the National Anthem, those are the moments I do it for.

YOU ALWAYS SAY THE BTCC CROWN IS WON IN TWO STAGES. FIRSTLY, GETTING TO THE SEASON FINALE WITH A CHANCE, AND SECONDLY, THE PERFORMANCE ON THAT FINALE. DOES A WEEKEND LIKE SNETTERTON BOLSTER YOUR CONFIDENCE HEADING INTO THE DECIDER?

For sure, it will be nice to arrive at Brands feeling confident in both myself and the car after Snetterton. I will prepare and ready myself to the maximum and then try to give my best performance on the day. There is a lot of extra pressure on the finale, but I kind of really enjoy it. It’s a huge privilege to be involved and I love the chance to fight for another Championship.

ONE THING WE HAVE COME TO LEARN IS YOUR ABILITY TO RISE TO THE MOMENT, AND HOW YOU CAN LIFT THE GAME WHEN THE PRESSURE IS ON AND THE STAKES ARE HIGH. THE RECOVERY FROM CROFT AND THAT LAP IN QUALIFYING ARE TWO RECENT EXAMPLES. WHAT IS KEY TO THIS?

In any sport or walk of life you have to be resilient. We will all make mistakes, but it’s about learning the lessons from that and going to the next race with a positive mindset.

I try to talk to myself rather than listen to myself and I find that really helps me.

I tell my kids going to school – Fail to prepare, prepare to fail – and I sort of live by that motto when it comes to racing too.

TELL US ONE THING THAT HAS STOOD OUT TO YOU FROM THE REACTION OF THE BTCC FANS LATELY.

The engagement has been off the scale recently. It’s so rewarding that as a Championship we are bringing so much joy and happiness to people’s lives, in such a difficult year.

The best reaction I had was after race 2 at Snetterton from one of my youngest fans, my little boy Adam.

He said to me… “Daddy, you’re my hero.” I think that’s better than any trophy I’ve ever taken home.
