TIGHT AT THE TOP IN THRUXTON QUALIFYING
TURKINGTON TAKES P9 IN THE SUNSHINE
- Colin Turkington will start race 1 from 9th position after a tight qualifying session at Thruxton.
- Despite carrying 57kgs of success ballast, the Team BMW driver managed a 5th row start with a helpful tow from his team mate Stephen Jelley.
- The sun was shining for the afternoon qualifying, which increased track temperatures but reduced lap times from morning practice.
- All cars were using the Goodyear hard compound tyre for todays running and will only race the harder rubber tomorrow as well.
I think the track got slower and slightly trickier for everyone in that session. The morning practice session suggested lap times were going to be rapid in qualifying so something certainly changed over lunch. I think the warmer temperatures played a role in that.
The top 6 was always going to be out of reach today with weight and the hard tyre. Give me a soft tyre every day of the week!
I think there was a little bit left in the final sector, but look, we’ve done a good job. Stephen dropped back on my third run to give me a tow and that jumped us up from P13. A tight knit team working at its best. I’ll repay the favour in time.
We’ll carry the kilos in race 1 and most likely be lighter and faster for race 2. We’re well placed for a good set of results and I’m determined to race hard for every point I can get.
I’ve saved tyres for tomorrow and that will help me. The plan is to tweak improvements into the chassis overnight, reset and focus on going forwards.
