BALLAST LADEN TURKINGTON POSITIVE ABOUT RACE DAY AS THE BTCC ROARS BACK TO LIFE

Colin Turkington will start race 1 tomorrow from P15 following a highly competitive qualifying session this afternoon.  Hampered by the 75kgs success ballast, Turkington was happy with the balance of his BMW 1 series, but unable to climb up the order.  With a few tenths making the difference between the 3rd and 7th row, it was another incredibly close session despite the long lap distance.

FOURTH ROW START FOR DIAMOND DOUBLE

The second qualifying of the day was a new addition onto the BTCC Saturday schedule for this weekend in order to celebrate the Championship’s Diamond Jubilee. Running ballast free and on the Standard compound tyre, this session decided the starting positions for tomorrow’s feature race – The Diamond Double.

Colin was very quickly the pace setter setting a lighting quick 1.55.4 lap, the fastest of the day so far, only to loose the time after a minor track limits infringement.  He was luckily able to go again and recorded a time good enough for the fourth row of the grid.

With the rapid pace of the ballast free BMW clear to see, Turkington is looking forward to Sunday’s feature race and feels positive about what he can achieve throughout the day.

DIAMOND DOUBLE QUALIFYING

“I’m filled with confidence about tomorrow despite things today not going entirely our way.  We couldn’t improve my initial time in Q1 as the session went on because the track became increasingly dirty but the balance was really good.  I’m happy with the pace in the car with full ballast, that was as good as we could do.

The success ballast has done its job today but I never expected anything less.  Once we got it out the BMW was rapid and a full second a lap quicker.

Of course I am disappointed to loose the front row start but you can’t dwell on these things.

The positives are clear to see … we have a well balanced car that will be capable of proving its worth tomorrow.”
