SILVERSTONE QUALIFYING REPORT

P8 FOR TURKINGTON

As the BTCC grid took to the straights of Silverstone for qualifying it looked highly likely that the final result was going to be just as mixed as the weather.  Free practice 1 was completed in the damp early Saturday morning but the second session provided dry running on slicks.

By mid afternoon when qualifying was due to start, the sky had cleared and resulted in dry and consistent track conditions for the teams and drivers.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Opting to coordinate a towing system, Team BMW took to the track in formation using its strength of numbers to assist in their qualifying effort.  Ensuring each driver had their fair share of the draught, the three BMW’s worked together throughout the 30 minutes.  It was the first run of the session when Turkington set his best time good enough at that point to reserve P2.  As the session continued into the second half others were able to move up the order but Colin was unable to improve his time and ultimately took the chequered flag sitting P8.

Content with the fourth row of the grid Colin was pleased to be in a position he can race from tomorrow and is keen to tap into the potential of the BMW.

FULL CLASSIFICATION

COLIN TURKINGTON

“It’s good to be up at the sharp (ish) end of the grid for tomorrow and I’m confident I can really race from there.  Silverstone was always going to challenge us with it’s long straight nature and we did everything we could today to ensure that we tackled the session as a team.  Running in the three car formation allowed us to generate a slipstream which I had to ensure I converted when it was my turn.

I honestly do feel there was more time out there for me, but I imagine most people will be saying the same thing!

Race day will allow us to further improve the BMW and I’m looking forward to tapping into that potential.  My rivals are behind me and I will push hard to out-score them as best I can.”
