SILVERSTONE QUALIFYING REPORT
TURKINGTON SECURES THIRD ROW START IN TIGHT AND TENSE QUALIFYING SESSION
Championship leader Colin Turkington will start race 1 tomorrow ahead of his rivals following an incredible lap in another close qualifying session at Silverstone.
Qualifying in P6 despite carrying 54kgs of success ballast was as good as the Team BMW could ever have hoped for with rival competitors starting behind.
It had been a challenging day for the defending champ in free practice as the heavy car looked unlikely to make inroads into the top 10. Taking it step by step and showing his determination to turn the day around, Turkington delivered his best when it mattered in a very tense 30 minutes of qualifying. Working alongside team mate Tom Oliphant, the pair assisted with slipstreams to secure P5 and P6 for the two Team BMW 3 series.
It was a really good lap and we extracted everything we could from the heavy car.
It’s been difficult today with the weight and when the lap times are so close there is no mercy.
There are very few places where you can counter-act the weight and make a difference here at Silverstone so working as a Team was critical today. Tom and I worked so well together and we really gained from that.
There’s still work to do on the car for tomorrow, it needs tamed a little more but there is only so much you can do with that with 54kgs.
I think the 3 Series will be really fast with the weight out and we have that confidence underneath us. On a whole, P6 was a fantastic effort and we’ve got in front of the other title protagonists so that’s a great start to the weekend.
