REVISED 2020 CALENDAR
TOCA ISSUES REVISED 2020 BTCC CALENDAR SUBJECT TO COVID-19 SITUATION
The organisers of the British Touring Car Championship have today (Monday 27th April) released a revised calendar for their 2020 season.
This decision to coordinate a new schedule, should the COVID-19 situation permit, provides a new date for drivers and teams to work towards. Fully supported by its television partner ITV, the nine event Championship has been condensed into three and a half months with 27 races taking place from August to mid November.
SUBJECT TO GOVERNMENT DIRECTION
The revised nine event calendar secures the place of the BTCC at the UK’s premier circuits and secures the LIVE and exclusive coverage provided by the ITV network. It is however, completely dependent upon Government approval and direction for sport regarding COVID-19, therefore remains provisional.
“ALLOWS US TO WORK TOWARDS THIS DATE”
2019 Champion Colin Turkington backs the decision to have a new calendar in place and is excited about the prospect of getting back to racing in August should it be safe to do so.
“I’m fully supportive of TOCA’s decision to coordinate a revised calendar for the 2020 season and issue a new set of dates for us to work towards. Although there is still significant uncertainty surrounding the future of sport for this year, it would be foolish to leave planning to the last minute.
There will have to be many discussions about the logistics and operations required to ensure everyone’s safety, but also to coordinate this super busy four month period. How we went about our business before will have to change considerably. The more time we have to do this, the better.
For now the priority is to continue to follow the Government advice and remain strong, fit and healthy. I plan to take part in a few more virtual races over the coming months and ensure that when racing does resume. I’ll be in the best possible shape.”
