BRANDS HATCH INDY QUALIFYING REPORT
SECOND ROW START FOR TURKINGTON IN THE WET
Colin Turkington will start on the second row of the grid in P3 for tomorrow’s first race after a stunning qualifying in the new BMW 3 Series. Despite having never even tested in the wet, the Team BMW 330i M Sport proved it’s impressive pace is consistent, regardless of track conditions.
It was far from easy for the drivers and teams today as every session brought about cold, damp, and ultimately wet conditions. Running on slicks for the first two practices this morning, it was a shift to full wets for the afternoon qualifying event. Turkington had been quietly chipping away at the setup throughout the day, edging things in the right direction and by qualifying had a much more predictable and compliant car. Ending the session in P3 Turkington was delighted with the days progress, and with team mates Jordan and Oliphant closely behind him in P4 and P5, the new 3 Series is looking like another strong package.
“First thing this morning we had a real handful of a car, which I think was triggered by the cold track temperatures. I knew we were just going to have to be patient and chip away at the setup in order to pin things down.
By the end of FP2 we’d made considerable progress and I was much happier with how the 3 Series was working for me. Every change had been a positive one and that was helping our confidence moving into qualifying.
We carried out shakedown with wets and this did gave me a feeling for how the new 2019 Dunlop compound would work and react, but effectively qualifying was the first time we had properly tested them.
The balance felt reasonably good straight away and throughout the session we continued to nudge it the right way.
We threw a new set of rubber at it under the red flag with six minutes to go and as predicted, they came on incredibly quick. It was here I secured my 53.7s good enough for P3.
We made the right calls today at critical decision making points and this bodes well. Well done team!”
*PLEASE NOTE ANDREW JORDAN’S BEST TIME WAS A REINSTATED TIME THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN DISALLOWED. HE WILL NOW START P4.
