THRUXTON QUALIFYING REPORT

LAP RECORD SMASHED AS TURKINGTON SHOWS BLISTERING PACE SECURING FRONT ROW START

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington will start race 1 tomorrow from the front row after a blistering lap secured him P2. It was a time of 1m15.847 that broke the lap record and it was enough to hold P1 until the final stages of the session before the Honda of Matt Neal pipped him to pole position.

The conditions couldn’t have been farther removed from the previous two meetings and Colin Turkington was relishing the heat in his Team BMW 1 series. Showing his ‘typical Turkington’ form, his pace and intentions were clear to see from the early morning practice sessions with a P1 and P2 result.

“Historically the BMW’s have been stronger over race distance at Thruxton, and I would have been happy with a start from any position on the first two or three rows. But we came out of the blocks this morning with a strong balance and during the day have been edging closer and closer to that optimum window of performance.

To get below that lap record was a huge result, and although the point for pole would have been lovely, the front row is amazing.

The sun drenched conditions are perfect for us with the BMW, and the hotter the better tomorrow. Tyre management for race distance is critical and the 1 series has excelled at this over the years, but we won’t be resting on our laurels. This evening its back to the debrief room and we will be focusing mainly on achieving that.

Today has been the result of a great effort from the team of engineers and I’m delighted for everyone.

We are perfectly set for a super sunny race day and I can go to bed confident tonight!”
