Turkington to race Brabham BT5 at Siverstone Historic Event

Colin Turkington will join an illustrious list of drivers when he takes his seat in the iconic 1963 Brabham BT5 this weekend. Pairing up with Sam Thomas in the Historic Sports Car Club event at Silverstone; Turkington will steer the highly sought after Brabham machine in the Guards Trophy race.

The two day event at Silverstone will take place over the full Grand Prix circuit on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May, and will feature racing from some of the most fantastic single seater and GT sports cars from the 50’s, 60’s 70’s and 80’s.

Colin will race on Sunday in the forty minute – pit stop – driver change ‘Guards Trophy’ at 3.45pm, behind the wheel of one of only two ever made – Brabham BT5’s.

Built in 1963 by Brabham (mainly responsible for constructing Formula Junior and Formula 1 cars), the car was a step into new territory for the manufacture and was the first sports car built by them at this time. Known as the BT5, the compact sports car actually shared the basic design and many components of the single seater racers produced by Brabham in 1962. After only making two of the BT5’s in 1963, Brabham went on to develop a BT8 in 1964 and one BT12 in 1966 before calling it a day on sports cars and concentrating their efforts on single seaters. Today therefore, the BT5s and BT8s are highly sought after machines. The BT5 Turkington will pilot, now supported by Sam Thomas Racing, has recently competed at Laguna Seca in California and the Goodwood Revival in the UK with two wins in the last two outings

Excited to get behind the wheel of the 140BHP rear wheel drive 1963 machine, Turkington expressed his newly found love of historic race cars.

“This is a new but exciting world of racing for me. I’m finding the passion of the people infectious, the history of the race cars fascinating and am slowly falling in love with the historic scene. Sam runs some fabulous cars and it’s a great opportunity to get in the seat and explore the capabilities of these classic race cars.

The Brabham BT5 is a very special little car and it carries a story that enthusiasts around the world are extremely interested in. It’s been competitive in it’s most recent outings in the HSCC Guards Trophy, so I’m looking forward to getting to Silverstone and seeing what we can do!”
