Strong Silverstone Secures Turkington’s Spot in Season Showdown
STRONG SILVERSTONE SECURES TURKINGTON’S SPOT IN SEASON SHOWDOWN
Turkington claims three strong finishes at Silverstone ensuring he will arrive at the season finale with a mathematical chance of the Championship title.
Continuing to defy all odds, Colin Turkington took his back of the grid penalty for race 1 on Sunday morning and emerged later that evening 11 points closer to the top of the standings with an 8th and two 4th place finishes.
With the National circuit characterised by three long straights it was always going to make it difficult for the Subaru’s; but showing what’s possible with a passionate team and dedicated work, Turkington transformed a trying weekend into a reason for celebration.
Securing his spot in the season showdown, the former double Champion has superseded all expectations in year one of this project. He has been the highest point scorer of the grid since Oulton Park and had the season only begun then – he would be the Championship leader by 14 points.
Turkington leaves no stone unturned in his preparations. He conducts a methodical and controlled approach to every event and his silky smooth race craft is admired up and down the pit lane.
Overtaking 19 cars in Race 1 was the pivotal moment in the weekend and set Colin up to score well in the following two races. Never missing an opportunity, he continued to make forward progress and brought the immaculate number 4 Subaru home in 4th place in both races.
The top group of cars remained nose to tail throughout every race with plenty of moving and shaking; thrilling the bursting grandstands with exciting and hard racing. Punctures added to the tension sending chills down the spine of championship contenders, but in the end the likely contenders emerged intact.
It sets the season finale up as one of the greatest showdowns since the 1990’s with the top 7 in the championship separated by only 37 points. There are 67 on offer throughout the final weekend at Brands Hatch leaving Turkington definitely in with a chance albeit an outside bet.
Determined to push hard until the very end, Colin is keen to finish the season as far up the order as he can commenting, “In 2014 I arrived at Brands Hatch 50 points in the lead but I still wasn’t sleeping. Anything can happen in this championship and we all know it only too well.”
I left Silverstone hugely satisfied after three strong finishes despite having to start the first race from the back of the grid. An unexpected good haul of points at one of our toughest circuits means I go to the final meeting 37 points from the top of the table and still a contender for the championship.
Making good progress early in the day finishing 10th [later promoted to 8th] in race 1 was the perfect start and the key to my weekend. The grip on the circuit was unusually low, so we had to work hard to find a good setup, but thanks to my engineering team we did and I was able to keep progressing and take home another two fourth place finishes.
I go into the finale still fighting for honours, albeit as the underdog. This is an incredible achievement for the whole team considering the tough start to the year and this being our first season with the Levorg. My focus is already on Brands and I will keep the pressure on to see how far up the championship leaderboard I can get.
Without people like Kevin my engineer, this project wouldn’t be what it is and I’m lucky to have such a kindred spirit to work with.
