Silverstone Success for Turkington

Turkington doubles up with further Classic success

It was a successful outing for Colin at the ‘home of British Motorsport’ last weekend as he picked up another piece of silverware; this time in the HSCC Guards Trophy at Silverstone.

Celebrating 50 years of Historic Motorsport, the HSCC arrived at the Northants circuit on May 21st with a bumper lineup of spectacular cars, highlighting the growth of the series throughout its half decade of existence.

The packed entry list and high standard of racing is reflective of the rising popularity of Historic racing; as immaculately prepared cars are setting lap times comparable with modern day machinery.

Turkington took to the track on Sunday morning; his qualifying session being the first time he had driven the stunning Brabham BT5 (once piloted by 1962 and ’68 F1 Champion Graham Hill). Wasting no time, he was soon on pace with class rivals and put the number 5 Brabham into P3, with a time of 2.27.2min.

It was a similar story in the forty minute race and at the half way mark Colin took over from team mate Sam Thomas. He quickly made progress through the field and after smashing his qualifying time by four seconds; brought the car home in second position.

Beaming from his experience in the 53 year old Brabham BT5, Turkington was pleased to hit the podium once again.

Colin says:

“I’ve had a brilliant weekend with Sam Thomas Racing and thoroughly enjoyed driving the unique Brabham. The car was really fun to drive and once I understood the characteristics of it, I was able to go quicker each lap. It was much faster on the straights than I was expecting and the handling was really precise.

If we’d been able to get a test day before hand, I’m confident we could have qualified on pole and fought for victory, but that doesn’t take away from the great result we achieved.

Many of the cars are touching 40 to 50 years old with incredible value; but the racing is just as competitive as any other series I’ve raced in. It’s also the first time I’ve raced a car without a roof, so I now need to clean all the flies off my helmet”.
