Q&A WITH COLIN TURKINGTON

THE SECOND VISIT TO THRUXTON THIS YEAR FOR YOU COLIN. WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTING THIS TIME ROUND?

I’m expecting it to be slightly more mixed up than our first visit. When we came here to launch the season in May, we were all without success ballast. This time I’ll have 57kgs and the other contenders will also be ballast laden. I managed P3 in qualifying then, but that was in mixed conditions on a drying circuit, so it might be a steep ask to repeat that with the weight.

Nevertheless, I’m hoping the wind will be in our sails and it’s maximum attack on all fronts.

The BMW was strong at Knockhill last time out

YOU’RE SURE TO FEEL BUOYED BY YOUR RECENT RESULTS AT KNOCKHILL?

I feel like our confidence is back, and although such an everyday day word, it really is the key to success. From this point, we’re in better shape to push our title assault forwards. My position in the championship gifted me an opportunity at Knockhill that I needed to convert. I did, and from that perspective it was very rewarding. It won’t be smooth sailing from here on in, but the best is still to come from us.

Colin was the greatest points scorer at Knockhill

YOU ARE THE CHASER NOT THE CHASED THIS SEASON. DOES THIS ALTERNATIVE NARRATIVE AND SUBSEQUENT STRATEGY PROVIDE AN ALMOST REFRESHING CHANGE FOR YOU?

When you are the one that everyone is chasing, the one that everyone is desperate to beat, it can wear you down. I’ve found in the past it can sometimes be a false sense of security and the more challenging days where things go against you await nearer the end. That narrative had become familiar to me of course, so this season I’ve had to adjust my thinking. I’m enjoying this shift and finding new areas to work on. From that side of things it’s a real positive change.

I’ve always found security in having the points in the bag, but this time around I’m learning to be comfortable without the points but with the opportunity to score them. As long as I arrive at the Finale with a realistic chance of winning – then the gloves come off and it’s game on! I’m excited about what the next 15 races have in store!

Team BMW will be hoping to get back on the podium at Thruxton this Sunday
